While you are on the boat heading towards Bourtzi castle, you turn your gaze in the opposite direction and the journey begins. A journey into the historical past but also a journey of wonderful colorful images and imposing buildings, intense smells but above all a journey of unforgettable warm Greek hospitality. Nafplio was the first capital of independent Greece during the period 1828-1833 and took the lead in various events of world-historical importance.

The first National Printing Office
The first public printing plant was organized and operated in 1825
The first Parliament of the Greeks
It was originally built as a mosque and from 1825 to 1826 housed the first Greek Parliament.
The first High School
The reconstructed building, where today the City Hall is located, was built in 1857 to house the Nafplio High School.
The first Pharmacy
The first pharmacy of the Greek state, located in Trion Navarchon Square, was founded in 1828 in Nafplio by Bonifacio Bonafin
The first school of ‘Evelpidon’
It was founded on July 1, 1828 by decree of Ioannis Kapodistrias
The first introduction of the Potato
Potato cultivation was introduced by the then governor of the city, Ioannis Kapodistrias.

Some of the places that are worth visiting are the building of the first Evelpidon School which today houses the War Museum, the award-winning Peloponnesian Folklore Museum, the unique ‘Kompoloi’ Museum, the City Hall in Navarchon Square, the central square of Nafplio ‘Syntagma Square’, the imposing castles of Palamidi and Bourtzi, the park of Theodoros Kolokotronis with his impressive statue, the Gate of land and the church of Agios Spyridon, where the bullet which assassinated the governor of Greece Ioannis Kapodistrias is preserved on its facade.
